MetaXana comes from the Greek word

Metaxi (silk) and Xana (again)

It expresses our vision to produce natural and sustainable silk in Greece,

while European silk production has mainly relocated in Asia

Our Story

It all began in 2014, when a team of Greek and French passionate sericulturists decided to produce beautiful and sustainable silk in Greece. . Inspired by the stories of the historic silk producing village of Soufli in northeastern Greece, the team embarked on the journey. The non-profit organisation "La Soie des Hellenes" was founded, with the great support of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermes, and since then it has conquered many challenges!

10 years of research, allowed metaXana to grow from an idea and a passion to revive greek silk, to real business with production facilities and high ethical standards.

We pride ourselves for cultivating our mulberry trees in a sustainable manner, without pesticides or chemicals. Our silkworms are fed with rich leaves and produce in return, a beautiful natural silk.

“A beautiful cocoon is a tiny achievement in itself. Sericulture is about farming and nature but it is above all an art.”

Soufli

Soufli is a historic silk-producing village located in Northern Greece in the province of Eastern Thrace, with a long and recognised tradition in creating superior silk products

It is exactly there, that metaXana decided to establish its permanent base in order to give birth to a new era in silk production, almost brought to extinction

MetaXana prides itself for being among a handful of local cocoon producers, and the only one to produce 100% natural and sustainable silk thread.

Facilities

In Soufli, we operate in harmony with nature to grow our trees and our silkworms, to produce our quality natural and sustainable silk.

We use old and new techniques and machinery to obtain our raw silk, and we send it to France’s finest establishments for further processing, coloring and for it to become our original fabric.

Our achievements

The Art of Sericulture: observing silkworms, understanding their needs and how to fulfill them at the right moment. French sericulturists call it: "education".

We saved the “Prussas”, the local mulberry tree variety, a robust tree able to resist freeze, heat and river floods, which had almost disappeared.

We renovated an old building and turned it into a modern rearing house, well-adjusted to a performing sericulture.
